This workshop invites you into a unique process of exploring more creative ways of self-expression! Jan will lead
you in constructing your own mixed-media abstraction……….combining aggressive textures and unusual mediums
with various materials, including acrylic paint, acrylic inks and gels.

Jan’s focus in this workshop will be on layered and experimental art. Learning to express unsuspected insights into
the content of your work…….using aggressive textures and unusual mediums. The ability to bring the various “raw”
pieces and layers of materials into their final stages, within the whole of a painting….this is ‘accomplishment’….like

About the Artist

Cass has been weaving and teaching Bark Basketry since 1981. Cass’s baskets are unique in that they are made
with materials that she has gathered and prepared for her own work as well as for her students. Being formerly from
the state of Michigan, the materials she works with are Birch Bark, Eastern White Cedar, Basswood, Elm, and
numerous other pine barks. Her gratification is creating legacies to these trees by using the bark which would have
been discarded when the trees were harvested for their wood.
Cass co-authored the book Natural Baskets in 1992. She has been published in the crafts Report and Fiber Arts
magazines. Her work is featured in Baskets Now 2002, 500 Baskets, and Plaited Basketry in Birch Bark along with
New & Different Materials for Weaving and Coiling and Weaving Gourds. In 2005 she was chosen for a solo exhibit
at the Boston Arts & Crafts Society, where some of her work went on to Switzerland. Her work has been in the
esteemed SOFA Show in Chicago for four years, and three of her pieces are in the permanent collection at the
Michigan State University Museum.

Course Description
Students will start by creating a twill base. Doing a twill base, helps save a bit of time. The basket can be woven
over a mold if individuals would be more comfortable. As the materials are soft and pliable, beginners will be more
comfortable on a mold. Experienced weavers may choose not to use the mold. After twining their base with
sweetgrass, students will then start creating the sides eventually learning and incorporating the cross stitches. The
top of the basket will be finished with a folded over border. All students will get a pattern along with all the material
they will need to make the basket. The time to complete the basket will be 6-8 hours, depending on experience.
